Being a student gives you the perfect opportunity to start your blog, especially if you study at an online course or school. Why? Because you are in the perfect place to learn, write about interesting things and of course, have frequent access to a computer. But more than that, you should start a blog because you have things to say and you want people to read them. Here are a few easy tips on how to start and maintain your blog!

Start Free

First, there are a lot of free blogging platforms so start off with one of those, they are free, customizable and easy to use so that you can get your blog started, running, and possibly even making money before you even start to think about paying for it.

Set Up Information First

Alright, once you post a blog, people can see it and see your blog. Try setting up your blog profile, images, information, tracking devices, color scheme and etc. before you actually post a blog. This will mean that when people finally do stumble upon your blog post, your blog is all set up and looking pretty!

Post Regular Blogs

Now that you have your blog set up, you will want to post to it regularly. Depending on how often you like to blog this can be every day, or several times a week. Blogs that post at least two times per week will generally receive more traffic than blogs that post once per week or less.

Keep Up Quality

If you are posting blogs regularly than you run the risk of losing quality on posts when you don’t know what to write about. Avoid this by skipping a blog if you aren’t sure what to do or just browse around for inspiration until you find it!

Use Media

Using media such as images and video are a great way to add spice and interest to your blog. Don’t feel like typing? Just record a video blog or vlog and post that instead. It helps to interest readers because they can see, and hear, who you are while still maintaining your blog post. Images of course add a bit of visual spice to keep text from becoming too long or boring.

If you are blogging for a website or company than it is almost mandatory that you use SEO in your blog, however; even if you are just blogging for personal reasons, SEO can help you to get more views and more attention for your blog. First; about SEO:  SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the process of using keywords to direct search traffic to your blog. In example, if the keyword is SEO content, than you would use it in your blog to the point where it reaches a certain density.

Choosing Keywords

Choosing keywords is the most important part of SEO because the keywords are what you will use to actually attract visitors. Is your blog about fashion? Fashion for college students? Each of these could be a keyword, remember to always use a keyword that fits well into the subject of your blog because no one wants to search for something and come up with a blog that is completely irrelevant. Keywords that are suitable for use with a college fashion blog include cheap designer fashions, alternative fashions, fun fashion, college fashion and etc. Try mixing and matching and not always using the same keywords unless of course, you want everyone on your blog to be looking for the same thing!

Keyword Density

In general, using to little keywords is almost as bad as using to many keywords. Here is why. If you have to little keywords, your blog post will not come up because of keywords but if you have too many keywords, search engines will see it as spam and not bring it up either. A good level of keywords is anywhere between 1.5 and 2.5% that is 6-9 keywords per 350 words.

Blog Length

Believe it or not, the length of your blog is an important part of SEO. Did you know that in order to come up in Google Search, a blog should be a minimum of 350 words? This is because anything smaller is considered to be irrelevant because it is not long enough to be informative. Try aiming for 350-650 words per blog post because no one really wants to read anything longer!  Keeping your blog length within these limits will help you to come up in search and help to keep people interested because it is not to long!

Relevance

Another important part of writing SEO content is that it should be relevant to what people are looking for. This means it should be an interesting keyword that people will search for. This doesn’t mean you can’t write about what you had for breakfast or what you are doing after school, it just means that instead of using ‘What I had for breakfast’ and ‘What I’m doing after school’ as your keywords you should use more relevant versions of the same thing, ‘ Student Breakfast Idea’ and ‘Things for Students to do after school’ this makes your blog more searchable and more readable and informing rather than coming off as all about you (Even though it is!)

Now that you know the basics of SEO, try it yourself, use SEO techniques in your blog and see what happens. If you do it right and write about interesting topics you will most definitely get more views for your blog! Who knows, you might even get followers to!

As a college student, even at one of the best schools online, you probably don’t have the money to pay for your blog which is why it’s great that there are so many free ones that are not only easy to get but easy to use as well. For starters, before starting any blog you will need an email address (those are free to!) Here are the top five free blogs for you to start yours on!

Wordpress

Wordpress is currently one of the most popular free blogging sites available because it’s free, easy to understand and comes with a lot of customizable themes, backgrounds, text formats and posting options that in truth, outdo any other blog out there! Plus, you get free stats, easy to understand charts, Wordpress help and the ability to easily transfer your blog to a website if you choose!

Blogger

Blogger is actually Google’s blogging platform and from experience we know that anything by Google has to be good right? Blogger is actually very easy to understand, post to and edit and gives you easy customization options as well as some themes you can choose from. In general this blog is the easiest for a beginning blogger because it is clearly laid out without any technical language or etc. Blogger is also great for incorporating images, adding Youtube videos and using with Google Analytics!

Blog.com

Blog.com follows a similar format to Wordpress but is a bit simpler. Plus, because it isn’t used quite as much as Wordpress, you will probably have a better chance of getting the exact blog name that you want because it is more likely to not already be taken.

Tumblr

Tumblr is mostly suitable for photo bloggers (meaning amateur or professional photographers) who want to blog their photos. Tumblr can be used as just a blog but is really designed for use with photos. Tumblr goes great with mobile blogging, Apple users and anyone who wants a clean, refreshing blog without a lot of add on or options.

Live Journal

Live Journal is a free and easy blogging platform that actually used to be the most popular platform before Wordpress. The format is clean, easy to update, edit, add posts and make your own personalized touches to your blog!

You’re taking your online course and writing your blog at the same time. It’s going great only lately you’ve been writing less and less because you just don’t know what to write about? Using creativity in your blog is important to help get readers, followers and of course, to come up on search because your content is different from everyone else’s!  Here are five easy tips to help you to be more creative with your blog!

Write In The Morning

In the morning you will have more inspiration and have been less distracted by the day. Try getting your blog done first so that you feel more fresh and ready to tackle it. If you add a cup of coffee and wait long enough in the morning so that you wake up first, this can produce a nice, creative blog filled with your thoughts, ideas; mentions of coffee or the dreams you had the night before!

Follow Other Blogs

Other bloggers know what to blog about because well, if you’re reading the blog than they have already blogged it. Feel free to scan for information and look for ideas or inspiration but remember to never directly copy a subject, plus, the more unique your own content is the more views you will get which is a good encouragement to only be inspired by other people.

Scan The News

Scanning the news for inspiration and topics to talk about is a great way to not only get ideas to write about for your blog but to find hot, currently searched topics that will add views to your blog. No matter what is in the news, try to only write about stuff that actually interests you or you will find writing your blog to be a dull and unhappy experience

Write About Things That Inspire You

Check your coffee, your day’s lessons, your friends, your phone, those clothes you saw at the mall. Does any of it inspire or excite you? If so, you have a great, and very creative, thing to write about. Add whatever it is your thinking into your blog, sit back and watch the magic happen, after all, if you’re interested in it, others are to.

Don’t Use Formats!

Using formatting for your blog might be tempting but this can lead to simply regurgitating the same content every time you write your blog. This is boring and will do very little to improve your views or your readers. Write new posts with new formats or designs each time so that your content and your layout are fresh, clean and fun!

It doesn’t matter what your blog is about, as a student at one of the best online schools, you don’t always have time to blog, and you sometimes even forget! Blogging can actually take some time to get the hang of; here are five easy tips for finding the time to write your blog!

Set Aside Time

Setting aside time specifically for your blog is probably the best thing you can do to ensure that you keep publishing it. Set aside time once per day, once per week or once per month where you do nothing but sit down and brainstorm and write. Usually this period should be long enough for you to come up with and write at least one blog so in most cases, a minimum of thirty minutes to an hour. If you aren’t sure how often you want to publish your blog, publishing at least 2-3 times per week will help more people to find it!

Write When You Finish Assignments

When you finish your school assignments, take the time to write on your blog. You will be especially happy and creative at these points because you feel accomplished! This will help you to write, faster and to come up with ideas more easily!

Write Down Ideas throughout the Day

Have you ever had a great idea for a blog and forgotten it by the time you sat down to actually write your blog? Don’t do that anymore! Write your ideas down throughout the day; either use your computer, phone or a good old fashioned piece of paper!

Make Drafts in Your Spare Time

Do you have spare time but don’t need to write a blog yet? Try writing up your blog in your spare time, you can publish it later! Writing in your free time gives you blogs to post when you don’t have the time which can actually be handier than any other tip here!

Blog First, Fun Later

Blogging is fun! Get that into your head! Stop spending hours of your free time on chats, mindlessly surfing the net and refreshing your Facebook feed. Nothing has changed in the last 40 seconds, take the time and write your blog!
